Is the first ever full-body dubbing by voice actors of Hollywood quality?

Gorgeous voice actors gathered for the Japanese dubbed version! The dubbed version of the film is notable for the fact that the voice actors did not just voice the characters, but also took on the challenge of “full body dubbing,” in which they completely transformed into the characters themselves. We hope you will enjoy watching the voice actors transform into the characters of the film!

Voice Cast and Characters

Here are the characteristics of the characters and the voice actors’ comments on the full-body dubbing!

Koichi Yamadera / Playing the role of Beetlejuice
When I heard that they were going to do a full-body dubbing, I thought, “What do you mean? I thought, “It must be tough,” but it was really tough! It took dozens of times more time, manpower, and effort than normal dubbing. It was the first time I had ever had a four-hour preparation schedule, and the preliminary plaster molding took even longer. Originally, part of me wanted to be someone other than myself when I did voice acting, so it was a good memory for me and I am glad that they were able to make it with so much attention to detail.
Michael Keaton, who plays Beetlejuice, put a lot of effort into his voice, so I also put a lot of effort into my voice and worked very hard. Working as a dubbing artist for a foreign film is a different kind of experience from working as a voice actor for an animated film, so please pay attention to my work. I have done so much, so please, give me a buzz!

Beetlejuice: A human scaremonger in the afterlife who wants to marry a human. She is a good-natured person with a suspicious yet delightful personality.

Maaya Sakamoto / Playing the role of Lydia
Halloween has become a familiar event for me than ever before, so I thought it would be “fun now” to dress up like this, and I was allowed to do the full-body dubbing.
It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I hope to express the sensitive Lydia who looks scary at first glance but also has a tender side to her.
I first saw “Beetlejuice” when I was in elementary school, and I can’t tell you how many times I rented the movie.Winona Ryder is one of my favorite actors, so I was really surprised and happy that I could be a part of it after all these years.

Lydia: She is a psychic who was courted and almost married by Beetlejuice 36 years ago. She tries to summon Beetlejuice again to save her daughter, who is trapped in the afterlife.

Miyuki Sawashiro / Playing the role of Dolores
At first, I thought the whole body dubbed would be like cosplaying, but when I heard that they wanted to recreate the characters in the same quality as in Hollywood, I was happy to participate.
During the makeup process, I was looking forward to seeing the finished product, as it was a very busy four hours for all five senses, with some flapping and soft touches, some squishy things being stretched out, and the smell of the art room.
Never before have I felt so compelled to have someone approach me and take a look! I felt like I was getting closer and closer to Dolores as I got more and more scratches with each makeover.

Dolores: Beetlejuice's ex-wife, a fearsome character who is bent on revenge against her husband .

Mariya Ise / Playing the role of Astrid
At first, I had no idea what full-body dubbing was.
I transformed myself into Astrid without changing my costume or hair and makeup, and I even used makeup to add freckles.
It was the first time in my life as a voice actor to take on a character based on her appearance, so it was a lot of fun.
I was very excited to record the voice-over for this horror-comedy film, which is perfect for Halloween night and is filled with the worldview of director Tim Burton.

Astrid: Lydia's daughter, who does not believe in ghosts or the afterlife.

Chiaki Kobayashi / Playing the role of Jeremy
The dubbers for the entire film were all eminent. It was a dream come true for me to be a part of it, and I feel honored to be a part of it.
It’s not often that I get to be this much of a character, so it was a wonderful experience for me to be able to play the role as if I was possessed by the character, which is something I have never felt before.
Jeremy is a key character in the film, and I was excited to play him, wondering “What is going to happen? I was excited to play the role. The film has a dark atmosphere that only director Tim Burton could bring out, but it is also full of a lively and fun charm.

Jeremy: Jeremy is a mysterious young man living in the neighborhood whose life changes forever when he meets Astrid. He causes a great commotion on Halloween night.

Tomoyuki Morikawa / Playing the role of Rory
I think this is a full-body dubbing project with an idea as crazy as that of director Tim Burton. I had a lot of fun shooting on it, and it was also interesting in the sense that I got rid of my trademark bangs and glasses. I think this project was only possible because it was directed by Tim Burton, and I am honored to have been able to participate in the one-of-a-kind world that only he could express. The film is very lively and fun, and the voice cast for the full-body dubbed version is also very gorgeous, so I hope you will enjoy both the subtitled and dubbed versions.

Laurie: I am the producer of an occult TV show called "Ghost House" and also Lydia's manager.

Kazuhiro Yamaji / Playing the role of Wolf
We were allowed to come to an extraordinary scene. We had to do special make-up for the full-body dubbed version, including molding beforehand, and on the day of the dubbing, we spent 4 hours getting ready, so I think the time we spent doing postrecording was the shortest. Of course, this was the first time for me to experience something like this, but I was surprised and excited to see how far we had to go. I was surprised and enjoyed it.
The story is a Tim Burton world in full swing from head to buttocks. I also had a lot of fun recording Willem Defoe’s Wolf. Please pay attention to the last scene of Wolf.

Wolf: He is a mysterious character who is tracking Beetlejuice. He has a distinctive appearance with his side of his head shaved off by special makeup, leaving his brain exposed.

Keiko Toda / Playing Delia
When I heard that I would be dubbing the entire body, I interpreted that to mean that I wanted to put that much effort into the dubbing and filming. I often wear wigs on stage as well, so I was able to play the role without feeling any discomfort. I think that in animation, there are times when you have to wear costumes and hair and makeup that match the role, but this was the first time for me to go this far in a Western film.
Tim Burton’s worldview is on full display, making it a very enjoyable film. Delia, the character I played, is a character whose emotions change from one moment to the next; she screams and then suddenly comes back to life.It was a very challenging and interesting performance.

Delia: Lydia's mother, an artist with a penchant for the bizarre. She wears a red-haired wig and has a slightly irreverent and clear expression on her face.

As expected of Koichi Yamadera..! Totally Beetlejuice!
And as Tomoyuki Morikawa himself has said, he has undergone a major transformation by removing his trademark bangs and glasses! At first glance, it’s hard to tell that it’s Mr. Morikawa! It’s a Hollywood quality makeover, and it’s amazing!

The contents of the film

Relationship between the original and the new film

This film is a sequel to “Beetlejuice,” one of the origin stories that made the Tim Burton world famous. Thirty-five years have passed since the last film, and a new cast has been added.

The most notable cast member in the new film is Jenna Ortega, who plays Lydia’s only daughter, Astrid. Ortega is once again teaming up with director Burton after “Wendy’s Day.”

Also of note is Monica Bellucci, who plays Dolores, Beetlejuice’s ex-wife. In her first appearance in a Burton film, she plays a character that truly embodies the Tim Burton world, with her dismembered body held together all over with staples.
